Where would you PREFER to Be?

Level 101 – You have a full time job and are doing martial arts at night because it is your first love?

Level 201 – Your next goal is to Hit the 150 Active Student Count?

Level 301 – Your next stop is 300 active?

Level 401 – You are either looking to open your second location or already have multiple locations?

Level 501- You Have multiple locations and you have the “STUFF” and the drive to help other school owners grow their business?

Recognize at each level there is a VERY Different Skill set necessary to reach the next level.

At 101 you is it! That means you are running the show, teaching the lessons, signing up the students, paying the bills, planning for your future. Your entire focus is on enrolling more students, creating quality students and being able to support your self and the business.

At 201 you will need some help. You are going to need an assistant.Someone to help you with enrolling students, cleaning the academy, teaching some classes, creating quality students, but now you have to ensure they are on he same page as you. And you now have to be concerned with everything in level 101 plus now you have the responsibilities of hiring and having a payroll. New Skill SEt!

At 301 your are starting to ROCK! You now need mutliple staff members, and as we all know, everyone quits sometime. So the worst number in business is 1. One way to market, one way to collect money, one Employee and when they quit what next. New Skill Set! Be able to attract, train, hire and add the right kind of incentives so that new employees “Instructors” Excel!!!!!

At 401 you are joining a Very Elite Group of martial Arts business owners. You are no longer just a martial arts school, but an Organization. Everything has to be streamlined in your business. You no longer will be able to see what is going on in front of you. People will be in separate locations and you will have to trust your STaff Training that your employees will do the right thing without your supervision. They are so well trained they work just as hard without you looking over their shoulder. They market, enroll, teach, manage the academy like it was their own, because their pay and salary reflect it!
New Skill Set! Its not easy to let go. Be able to qualify, train and then manage people from various locations. You have to trust your decisions, trust your staff training methods, trust your choices of Instructors.

At 501 you have come Full Circle. YOu have completed the Journey Almost!!!! It is easy to motivate your own employees. Now comes the REal TEST!!!! Can you Lead, Guide, Motivate other martial Arts school owners whom you have very little rapport with. By your very nature are you able to connect and communicate with people in such a way that creates action in their life?
New Skill Set!

1. Define exactly who your best market is. Adults, Teens, Kids, Families. Then figure out where these people assemble.

2. Goto your local convention center upcoming events. The great thing about the internet is that most, if not all convention centers have all of their upcoming events posted on their website. Look through the upcoming events and determine which event will put you in front of your target audience.

For example we have done Health and wellness shows, Pet shows, home shows, garden shows….etc

3. Contact the group hosting the event, find out pricing.

4. Put together your booth. Have lots of pictures, handouts, visuals. Most importantly train yourself and your staff to approach people and strike up conversation about what you have to offer.

5. Have a raffle for people to sign up and win! You can have a Spin Wheel, or if they break the re-breakable board they win a prize.

6. Offer a mini martial arts class or a demonstration at the event.

7. The following day, put those leads into a follow up system.

8. Have a well trained staff member contact all the leads via phone. We have experimented with various call back scripts. A superior phone script will net you significant increase in appointments. Test Test Test!

Mastery Martial Arts® in Rhode Island does at least 6 trade shows per year. They are an excellent way to get out into the public and mingle. Introduce prospective families to the martial arts.

In House events. Lets start with our Most Effective Event…. Birthday Parties!

1. When you enroll a new student, offer to schedule a Free Birthday party for 15-20 of their friends and family.

2. If you missed step one, call everyone who is having an upcoming birthday 6 months out.

3. Capture name, email and addresses of everyone attending party 2-3 weeks before the party. This way you can communicate with them before they show up and explain what they have to look forward too.

4. Have the party planned rehearsed and practiced!!!!

5. Execute the Party Plan. At the end of the party offer a special to get started in the program.

It took me a long time to understand this process. For many years I would host a terrific party, and at the end, to only ask for the tiny commitment of them setting up an appointment for an intro. I think about those days now…. Embarrassing!!!!

That was Absolutely the wrong approach. Think about it…

You just delivered the very best 90 minute of Martial Arts Instructing, leading.  and motivating the children of the party. The parents witnessed first hand how you handled their child and the other children.  If they liked what they saw, heard and felt it is a no-brainer for them to investigate your program further and take you up on the offer!

Through the fun of the party, if you are able to get the children to act and behave differently than the parents are used to seeing…. You will have moms attention!!!

I will start with your people. A good friend of mine calls is Social Marketing the real deal….Face to Face!

Let’s face it. We offer a service, an intangible service for that matter. When someone meets yourself or your staff for the first time, many words are being spoken with just one look from your future student.

For me and Mastery Martial Arts  in Rhode Island it is a Home Run every time I can put one my Instructors in front of my future student or an Audience of future students.

I know the future student will walk away from that experience thinking, they are really professional, confident, respectful and if my child could be like that some day!   “Where do I sign up”

So everything matters, and how do you create this experience…. through training!

Are you and your staff comfortable walking up to someone on the street and striking up  a conversation with them about how your martial arts lessons can benefit their life?

It is the most powerful Hand to Hand combat marketing tool you have.  There is no better ad, radio ad, tv commercial, direct mail postcard than a real Life Instructor standing tall, communicating positively, energetically and respectfully. Demonstrating in that moment to the future student exactly how you and your program act and by your staff example what kind of person they can and will become!

That is POWERFUL!  So today I would encourage you to take a good look at the way you and your staff are interacting with the public and ask yourself… If I were a parent looking for martial arts lessons, or some activity to improve my childs confidence, discipline and respect…. Do I think this person can help me with that, by the way they are handling themselves right now?
